arcserve-KB : Arcserve RHA | How to redirect a DNS cname record (dns alias) during switchover.

Last Update: 2016-11-23 17:14:32 UTC
escription: RHA can be setup to redirect a DNS a-record for the master or it can be configured to redirect a cname (DNS alias) that points to the master FQDN. For users that use a cname for the users to connect to the master you must follow the instructions below to configure this properly.

Solution: To redirect a cname in your high availability scenario this is done in the 'switch computer alias' section. Depending on the type of scenario you have there may be 2 different places to enable alias redirection, this is the location you need to do it:

If you already have a cname record in DNS that points to the master's fully qualified domain name once you turn that option to 'on' it should automatically populate the box with the alias name found on that cname record. If the alias name for the master does not automatically populate please make sure the master and replica RHA engine accounts are domain admins so the engine has permissions to go into DNS and look for the cname, it also needs permissions to change the cname to point to the replica FQDN during switchover.

Here is an example, this is a cname record in DNS and once switch alias was turned on in RHA we can see it populated the alias name automatically which in this case is 'test'

Right now the cname points to the master (sps-server), during switchover it will be changed to point to the replica (sps-dc).
