arcserve-KB : Troubleshooting checklist for generic error "E8535 Failed to receive data from the client agent"

Last Update: 2016-04-28 14:33:12 UTC
 Error Message

E8535 Failed to receive data from the client agent. (ADDRESS= (DNS (IP Address)), EC=code, COMMAND=0"

 Description:
This is a generic error and it is very important to identify which session is failing with this error.

 Solution

We need to first identify on which server on which we have the problem.

Quickstart ->Job status-> Job History->Expand the job->Expand the failing server->Verify Failing Session
Examples for Session type are   System State/ Volumes/ Exchange/ SQL/  Virtual Machine RAW MODE etc

In the above example Backup Failed only on System state.

Step 1:

Make Sure the server is expandable and there is a communication with the agent.

Quickstart -> Backup-> Expand the Problem server

Or

Quicktstart-> Job status -> Right click on the job and modify it -> verify if we are able to expand the problem server under "Source tab"

If you cannot expand the node under the source tab refer to Document ID 4467 and verify  the basic connectivity

Step 2:

Refer to Document ID 3670 and make sure that you are on latest build availble for your version of CA ARcserve Backup.

  • Backup Server : Open the ARC server Manager -> Help > About (Screen Shot link)
  • Remote Server:
    • On remote server: Start ->Programs -> Ca -> ARCserve Backup->  Backup Agent Admin
    • Once Backup Agent Admin interface is opened.
    • Help-> About  ARCserve Backup Agent Admin (Screen Shot link)

Step 3:

  • Ensure that there are no zombie processes for caagstart.exe
  • Ensure that all the VSS writers are stable and none of the vss writers.
    • Login to the problem server and verify the state of VSS writers

start -> run -> vssadmin list writers

      •  Make sure that all the listed writers are stable
      •  If the VSS writers donot appear at all of if there is no response refer to following Article  3014 (system writer problems) .
      •  If its as application specfic writer ex-Exchange writer , SQL Writer ,  Sharepoint writer , SQL writer you need to troubleshoot the problem referring to the knowledge base documents specific for those applications.

Step 4:

Refer to the below table and refer to the knowledge base articles published for different session types for this specific error. You may then refer to the known issues section and obtain a test fix if you find that the fix is applicable for your problem .
