arcserve-KB : P00000293 | R 17.0 | AE0066 in restore job

Last Update: 2016-06-30 10:27:20 UTC

Problem Summary:

(1) "AE0066 Failed to create write file <path-to-a-file>. RC=5,Access denied"
Restore job prints this message for some files to activity log and fails.

(2) Regardless to the following File Conflict Resolution settings, the restore job always overwrites the files :
"Skip Existing Files", "Overwrite with Newer Files Only"

(3) E3583 VSS option does not have trial period. Please get a licenses for <name> for machine <name> (T00000291 included)

Backup jobs try to use VSS regardless to the UseVSS global option setting, and fail with this message.

Note:
1. Restore job breaks the hard link when replacing a file if it didn't have any hard links on its backup time.
You can change this behavior by setting the following registry option before the restore job runs (This option will be available with this patch)
Key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates
           \CA ARCserve Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters
Value Name (DWORD) : ReplaceHardlinkOnRestore
Value : 0 (default is 1)

For example, you back up FILE1.txt which doesn't have any hard links.
After that, you create a hard link FILE2.txt to it, and edit it.
hardlink : FILE1.txt <=> FILE2.txt (edited)

When you restore FILE1.txt to replace it,
For default (ReplaceHardlinkOnRestore=1) :
FILE1.txt and FILE2.txt will be no longer hard linked, and
FILE1.txt ... replaced with the original one which was backed up
FILE2.txt ... remains to be the edited one

If ReplaceHardlinkOnRestore=0 is set :
FILE1.txt and FILE2.txt will remain to be hard linked, and their data will be replaced.
hardlink : FILE.txt <=> FILE2.txt (data is replaced with the original one which was backed up)

Caution: Don't set ReplaceHardlinkOnRestore=0 when you restore system files over hard links to WinSxS.

2. Even after applying this fix, VSS is used for the system volume by default.
If user wants to take a risk and avoid using VSS for system volume, please create and set this registry value to 0.
Key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates
           \CA ARCserve Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters
Value Name (DWORD) : UseVssForSystemVolume
Value : 0 (default is 1 )
