Title:  ERROR: is disabled for SQL Server instance '/' on Replica host.

Description:

You're attempting to start a CA XOsoft for MS SQL High Availability (HA) scenario and encountering the following error:

'ERROR: <SQL Protocol/Network Library> is disabled for SQL Server instance '<Host Name>/<Instance Name>' on Replica host.'

Examples of Errors:

'ERROR: TCP/IP is disabled for SQL Server instance '<Host Name>/<Instance Name>' on Replica host.'
'ERROR: Named Pipes is disabled for SQL Server instance '<Host Name>/<Instance Name>' on Replica host.'
'ERROR: Shared Memory is disabled for SQL Server instance '<Host Name>/<Instance Name>' on Replica host.'
'ERROR: VIA is disabled for SQL Server instance '<Host Name>/<Instance Name>' on Replica host.'

Solution:

The SQL Protocol/Network Library referenced in the error is configured and enabled on the Master Server, however it is disabled on the Replica Server. SQL Server connectivity is based on the protocols configured on both the client and the SQL instance.

The Protocols or Network Libraries are used to Send and Receive network packets between the clients and the SQL Server instance. The client uses a specific network library to initiate connection to the SQL instance. The SQL instance must be configured to listen to incoming requests on the same network library. If the SQL instance is not listening using a specific network library it will be unable to respond to the connection request.

The same network libraries enabled on the Master must be enabled on the Replica server. CA XOsoft is making the assumption that if a Network Library is enabled on the Master server it is because one or more clients or applications are configured to initiate a connection to the SQL instance using that network library. IF the same network library is not enabled on the Replica then there is a risk that users or applications will be unable to successfully connect to the Replica instance of SQL following a CA XOsoft High Availability Switchover.

To Enable a Network Library on the Replica:

  1. Logon to the Replica server

  2. Launch SQL Server Configuration Manager

    • START -> PROGRAMS -> Microsoft SQL SERVER -> CONFIGURATION TOOLS -> SQL SERVER CONFIGURATION MANAGER

  3. Open SQL Server Network Configuration

  4. Select Protocols for MSSQLSERVER

    • NOTE: for a SQL Named Instance it will be MSSQLSERVER$<Instance Name>

  5. Enable the specific Protocol/Network Library referenced in the error.

NOTE: IF enabling the TCP/IP Protocol, make sure to assign the same TCP port for the Replica which is configured in the TCP/IP Protocol on the Master SQL server.
