arcserve-KB : Configure arcserve RHA to update WINS during Switchover

Title:  Configure CA ARCserve RHA to update WINS during Switchover.

Description:

In most cases clients and applications requiring NetBIOS resolution will execute broadcasts. In this case the method of network traffic redirection in a CA ARCserve RHA scenario would need to be Switch Host Name. In some cases, clients are directed to a WINS server instead. In this case redirection to the Replica server following switchover may not succeed. In this case it would be necessary to update the Master host record on the WINS server to direct to the Replica IP address.

This document contains a sample script which could be executed by CA ARCserve RHA during the switchover process.

Solution

Create 2 WINS redirection Scripts. One will update WINS and direct traffic to the Master and the other will direct traffic to the Replica. In this example, the 'Netsh' command line utility is used in a common batch file.

  1. Record the Host Name and/or IP Address of your WINS server.
  2. Record the Host Name of the Master Server, and the IP address of both the Master and Replica servers.
  3. Use a text editor to create a file which will update WINS and directs traffic to the Replica server.

    NOTE: In the example below the WINS server is 'XOLABDC1' and the Master Host Name is 'SQLPRD1'. The IP address 192.168.1.41 is the IP address of the REPLICA server.

    'UpdateWINS.cmd' (To Be Placed on REPLICA Server)

    @echo off

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=20

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=03

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=00

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 add name Name=SQLPRD1 ip={192.168.1.41}

  4. Use a text editor to create a file which will update WINS and directs traffic to the Master server.

    NOTE: In the example below the WINS server is 'XOLABDC1' and the Master Host Name is 'SQLPRD1'. The IP address 192.168.1.40 is the IP address of the MASTER server.

    'UpdateWINS.cmd' (To Be Placed on MASTER Server)

    @echo off

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=20

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=03

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 delete name Name=SQLPRD1 Endchar=00

    netsh wins server \\xolabdc1 add name Name=SQLPRD1 ip={192.168.1.40}

  5. Each script MUST be stored in the same path, including drive letter, on both servers. The script name and location matches, yet the contents differ slightly.
  6. Create your CA ARCserve RHA HA scenario.  At the Switchover Properties screen, open the Network Traffic Redirection section and then open the Action upon Success section within Network Traffic Redirection.
  7. Set Action upon Success to ON, and insert the path to UpdateWINS.cmd.

    (If your scenario is already created, then select the scenario in the manager and go to the High Availability tab. There will be the same Network Traffic Redirection properties as in the Scenario Creation Wizard.)

  8. Save the scenario and run it.
  9. When switchover is invoked the UpdateWINS.cmd file will be ran on the server node that is becoming the active resource.
