Title:  How to manually switchover to the DR Replica host in a CA XOsoft MS Exchange One-to-Many scenario using command line tools.

Description:

In a One-to-Many scenario a single Master replicates to a number of Replicas down the replication tree within CA XOsoft. Many times the first Replica will be a local High Availability (HA) Replica, giving it push button and automatic switchover capabilities, while the rest of the hosts within the replication tree are Disaster Recover (DR) replication Replica's only. In order to switch to a DR Exchange Replica multiple manual steps need to be taken.

This guide is to provide the ability to manually switchover to the DR Replica host and then utilize an additional scenario that is configured in such a way to allow for backward replication, and finally to be able to manually switch back to the Master host.

Solution:

Steps for the pre-requisites:

  1. Open the CA XOsoft Manager by first opening the Overview page clicking on Start then All Programs, then CA, then XOsoft, and then Overview Page.
  2. Login using domain credentials.
  3. Click Scenario Management link to open the CA XOsoft Manager.
  4. Select the One-to-Many scenario that contains the DR host that will be switched over to and verify that it is in the forward replication direction.

    1. Stop the scenario by clicking the Stop (Figure 1) button if it is in the running state.
  5. To create the Backwards DR scenario used only for to replicate in the reverse direction click on Scenario then New on the menu at the top of the window.
  6. Choose the scenario group that the Many-to-One scenario is located in and choose to Create a New Scenario then click the Next button.
  7. Select MS Exchange for the server type, choose Replication and Disaster Recovery (DR) for the product type, and None for the tasks on the replica then click the Next button.

    Figure 2
  8. Choose a name for the scenario such as 'Backward Scenario from DR Replica' and supply the DR Replica hostname or IP address as the Master and the Master hostname or IP address as the Replica click the Next button.

    Figure 3
  9. Choose the same storage groups within the Master Configuration then click the Next button.
  10. Validate the DR Replica host is symmetrical to the Master and then click the Next button.
  11. On the next two screens choose any custom settings that have been applied to the Many-to-One scenario clicking the Next button when done with each screen.
  12. Make sure that the scenario verifies correctly and then click the Finish button.
  13. There should now be scenarios that look like the following image, please note the IP's within the new scenario comparative to the original One-to-Many scenario.

    Figure 4
  14. The production One-to-Many scenario can be started back up to continue to protect the Master, but make sure to not start the new scenario until you need to switch back to the Master.

  15. Perform the above steps for each additional DR Replica that you would like to switchover to.

Steps to switch over once the pre-requisites have been completed:

Note: Use steps 1 through 5 only when the Master host is available. In the event of a disaster these can be skipped.

  1. Click on the scenario that is in the Running state and has completed Synchronization, Pause theIsAlive timeout heartbeat check by clicking on Tools in the CA XOsoft Manager menu and then click Suspend Is Alive Check.
  2. Login to the Master host via a remote desktop session.
  3. Open a command prompt by clicking on Start then Run then type in cmd and hit OK.
  4. Change directory to the CA XOsoft Engine installation directory.

    1. By default this directory is C:\Program Files\CA\XOsoft\Engine
  5. Next run the CA XOsoft command line tool ws_ex2ex to complete the switchover by typing the following command and then hit enter:

    1. ws_ex2ex.exe -r stop -p

      Figure 5
  6. Wait for any data within the Master's spool to empty to zero.

    Figure 6
  7. Stop (Figure 7) the CA XOsoft One-to-Many scenario.
  8. Using your DNS administration change the Host (A) records value from the Master hosts IP address to the Replica hosts IP address.

    1. i.e. Exchange.Demo.com from 10.10.1.24 to 10.10.1.11

  9. Next login to the Replica host via a remote desktop connection.
  10. Open a command prompt by clicking on Start then Run then type in cmd and hit OK.
  11. Change directory to the CA XOsoft Engine installation directory.

    1. By default this directory is C:\Program Files\CA\XOsoft\Engine
  12. Next run the CA XOsoft command line tool ws_ex2ex to complete the switchover by typing the following command and then hit enter:

    1. ws_ex2ex.exe -a -s <master hostname> -t <replica hostname> -p

Steps to switch back to the Master host:

  1. In order to switch back open the CA XOsoft Manager and select the 'Backward Scenario from DR Replica' scenario.
  2. Click on the Run button (Figure 9) from the tool bar.
  3. Login to the Replica host via a remote desktop session.
  4. Open a command prompt by clicking on Start then Run then type in cmd and hit OK.
  5. Change directory to the CA XOsoft Engine installation directory.

    1. By default this directory is C:\Program Files\CA\XOsoft\Engine
  6. Next run the CA XOsoft command line tool ws_ex2ex to complete the switchover by typing the following command and then hit enter:

    1. ws_ex2ex.exe -r stop -p

      Figure 10
  7. Wait for any data within the Replica's spool to empty to zero.

    Figure 11
  8. Stop the (Figure 12) 'Backward Scenario from DR Replica' scenario.
  9. Using your DNS administration change the Host (A) records value from the Replica hosts IP address to the Master hosts IP address.

    1. i.e. Exchange.Demo.com from 10.10.1.11 to 10.10.1.24

  10. Next login to the Master host via a remote desktop connection.
  11. Open a command prompt by clicking on Start then Run then type in cmd and hit OK.
  12. Change directory to the CA XOsoft Engine installation directory.

    1. By default this directory is C:\Program Files\CA\XOsoft\Engine
  13. Next run the CA XOsoft command line tool ws_ex2ex to complete the switchover by typing the following command and then hit enter:

    1. ws_ex2ex.exe -a -s <Replica hostname> -t <Master hostname> -p
