Title:  How to manually delete a few sessions from a staging enabled file system device?

Description:

In some cases when using a staging job you may have set a policy to migrate sessions to tape after X number of days and then retain the sessions on the disk until Y days. In case your disk space, where the staging file system device is located, is filling up before the Y days elapse you may want to delete some sessions to ensure new backups are successful.

Solution:

This can be achieved using the command line utility CA_DEVMGR using the -PURGE switch. The syntax for this command is:

ca_devmgr -purge <adapter #> <scsi ID> <lun> -sessions <session range|all>

To find out the Adapter (Board), SCSI ID and LUN assigned to the file system device: go to Quick Start -> Administration -> Device in the ARCserve manager Highlight the FSD and look at the Description part towards the lower right-hand side:

In the example above Adapter = 2, SCSI ID = 2, LUN = 0

If I want to purge sessions 1, 2 and 3 for this staging enabled FSD, the command used would be:
C:\Program Files\CA\ARCserve Backup>ca_devmgr ”purge 2 2 0 -sessions 1-3

Note: Use the purge switch with caution as it will permanently delete the sessions and is an irreversible action.
