Title:  How to change the debugger from Visual studio (Just In Time) to Dr Watson?

Description:

Incase if the Visual Studio (JIT) debugger frequently captures the below message, the ARCserve manager will close down abnormally. In order to avoid this behavior you may change the debugger to Dr Watson.

Figure 1

Solution:

ARCserve r12.0 version uses 'SQL Express 2005' or 'Full blown SQL 2005 / SQL 2000 SP4' as standard ARCserve Database. We would come across this behavior when using 'SQL Express 2005' or 'Full blown SQL 2005' as ARCserve database.

The above stated behavior will occur because the SQL Server 2005 installation process calls the Visual Studio installation process. The Visual Studio installation process changes the default application debugger to the Visual Studio JIT debugger. This change occurs regardless of which debugger you previously used. You do not receive any notification that this change has occurred.

To resolve the issue, we have to re-enable Dr. Watson program to catch the unhandled exceptions. After this change, the Visual Studio JIT debugger will no longer catch unhandled exceptions. The instructions stated below will change the debugger back to Dr Watson:

  • Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  • Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    drwtsn32 -i
