Title:  How to configure ARCserve to auto clean LTO drives in a library?

  1. Load one or more cleaning tapes in the library and configure ARCserve as detailed in Tech Document TEC475707 How to configure cleaning slots in CA ARCserve Backup 12.0.

  2. Open the Manager and go to Quick Start > Server Admin > select the server > click Configuration > click the Tape Engine tab > check the box at the bottom 'Use Tape Alert'.

The LTO drive manufacturers recommend that the drive is not cleaned after a set number of hours. Instead they recommend the drive is cleaned only when the drive requests it.

When ARCserve is configured as detailed here a cleaning tape will automatically be loaded in the drive whenever it is needed. If the drive needs cleaning in the middle of a backup the backup will be paused, the drive cleaned, and then the backup will resume.
