Title:  How many File System Devices(FSD) can be created in ARCserve r12 SP1?

Description:

Up to 255 devices including FSD and Non-FSD device are supported in ARCserve r12 SP1; 255 is the limitation for devices of all types. If user creates more FSDs while Non-FSD devices(e.g. tape drives) exist, user may fail to create a new FSD with an 'Unknown error ID' when the max device limit(255) is reached.

Solution:

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry.
Before you modify the registry, make sure to create back up of the registry and ensure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem may occur.
For more information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, please review the relevant Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on support.microsoft.com.

Applying fix T5E5028 can solve this problem. After applying T5E5028:

  1. By default, the user can only create up to 128 File System Devices(FSD). An error message will appear if user tries to add the 129th FSD.

  2. For the user who wants to use more than 128 FSD, he can add a DWORD MaxFSD under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\Base\TapeEngine\CONFIG] and set it to the number of FSD he prefers to use.

  3. If the registry value MaxFSD exceeds 255, the max FSD limit will be reset to 255.
