arcserve-KB : Backup job fails immediately. Backup log has the following error "OpenVolume::CAVOLCTL_GET_BLOCK_SIZE failed, mserr=1."

Error Message:

Backup job fails immediately. Backup log has the following error 'OpenVolume::CAVOLCTL_GET_BLOCK_SIZE failed, mserr=1.'

Description:

Backup job would fail immediately but the activity log would not have information, warning or error related to the reason for the failure. The Backup-xxxxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxx-xx.log would have the following errors,

2014-01-05 22:00:07:565 59132 52856  CVolumeChangedBitmapFromVolumeDriver::OpenVolume::CAVOLCTL_GET_BLOCK_SIZE failed, mserr=1.
2014-01-05 22:00:07:565 59132 52856  CVolumeChangedBitmapFromVolumeDriver::PrepareForSnapshot::m_hVolume is not a valid volume handle.
2014-01-05 22:00:07:566 59132 52856  ReplicateVolumes::Failed to PrepareForSnapshot with the driver for volume D:

Solution:

  1. Check the status of the ARCserve D2D BLI driver by running the following command in the command prompt,
    sc query arcflashvoldrv
    Check if the State shows 'Running'.

  2. If the ARCserve D2D BLI driver is installed but it is not running, then reboot the server.
  3. If the driver is not installed or if the driver is installed and the problem continues even after the reboot, then uninstall and reinstall the driver. Refer the following article,

  4. Run a backup after reinstalling the ARCserve D2D BLI driver. (Make sure the server was rebooted after reinstalling the driver as mentioned in Step 3).
