arcserve-KB : UDP || VMWare Agentless | Unable to backup servers that are clustered using MSCS

Last Update: 2018-01-08 17:25:20 UTC
Error Message:
Could not take a snapshot of the virtual machine. ESX Server/ Vcenter server reported the following error. Virtual machine is configured to use a device that prevents the snapshot operation. Device “is a SCSI controller engaged in bus-sharing”

Problem:
Whenever we try to backup virtual machines which are clustered using MSCS[Microsoft Cluster Service] the backup fails while creating a snapshot due to SCSI bus sharing.

Environment:
Arcserve UDP Product Version: All versions of UDP.
Guest Operating system: 2008 r2 sp1 and above.
ESX version :5.0 and above (any ESX version less then ESX 5.0 is not supported by UDP).
Plan: Agentless.

Cause:
Snapshots or backups of the virtual machines configured with bus-sharing is not possible due to the limitation from VMware.

For further information please refer to the below article:

Solution:
Install the UDP agent on the Virtual Machines which are in cluster and create an agent based backup plan.
