arcserve-KB : UDP | How to migrate an existing UDP setup to a new server

Last Update: 2018-01-30 17:46:41 UTC
Description: How to migrate an existing UDP set up to a new server.

Environment:
UDP v5.X  and UDP V6.X

Solution:

If you want to migrate UDP existing version to a new server you need to consider the following

  • Migrate with the same configuration (Plans, RPS, Datastore details, Alert configuration and so..)
  • Ensure that backup data in tact without any data loss.

Consideration the following before planning the migration irrespective of any of the below scenarios
  1.  Verify on which server the UDP database installed
    • Installed on the local UDP server
    • Installed on a Remote UDP server
    • Installed on a Central SQL server
  2. Verify the UDP versions of the servers where UDP is installed.
  3. Verify the versions of SQL servers.
  4. Verify if there are any other applications installed which uses SQL. Example: SAGE or other ERP or CRM tools.

Scenario A:
If server A has to be decommissioned and if UDP setup is to be migrated to another server which has UDP same version already installed.

  • Server OS: Same
  • UDP Version: Same
  • UDP Database: Local on server A
  • UDP Database: Local on server B

Steps to follow:
Server A:
a. Install SQL management studio
b. Export the UDP Database instance
Refer:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms140052.aspx

Server B:
Note: On this server UDP is already installed.
a. Install SQL management studio
b. Import the UDP DB instance
Refer:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms140052.aspx
c.  Open the UDP console and change the DB settings to use the old UDP database that was imported.

Alternate / Easier option would be to
  • Uninstall UDP
  • Import the Old UDP database
  • Install UDP with out the option to OVER WRITE DATABASE

Scenario B:

  • Server OS: Different
  • UDP Version: Different
  • UDP Database: Local on server A
  • UDP Database: Local on server B

You would need to follow the same steps as outlined in the Scenario A

Scenario C:

  • Server OS: Same / Different (Not Relevant)
  • UDP Version: Same / Different (Not Relevant)
  • UDP Database: Local on server A
  • UDP Database: Central SQL server

Steps to follow:

Server A:
a. Install SQL management studio
b. Export the UDP Database instance
Refer:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms140052.aspx

Central SQL server:
Import the UDP DB instance
Refer:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms140052.aspx
or
http://documentation.arcserve.com/Arcserve-UDP/Available/V6/FRA/Bookshelf_Files/HTML/Solutions%20Guide/index.htm?toc.htm?udp_mig_db_after_upgrade.htm

Server B:

Note: On this server UDP is already installed.
a. Install SQL management studio
b. Import the UDP DB instance
Refer:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms140052.aspx
c. During the installation point to the central SQL server and the imported database.

Problems one can encounter during the migration operations:

a. Incompatibility of the SQL versions.

SQL databases can be imported or restored to a SAME version or higher versions ONLY. SQL versions are not backward compatible.
Example: Restore of 2012 instance to 2008 server is not possible.

b. When trying to import the database and there are other applications which use SQL also:

Environment:
New 2012 R2 server has a SAGE software which uses SQL 2008 SP3 DB and UDP 6.0 uses SQL 2014.
While trying to restore the DB from 2008 R2 to 2012 server, SQL by default is detecting 2008 SP3 as the SQL version and the following message

Refer the below third party article for the above errors:

http://www.howtogeek.com/50354/restoring-a-sql-database-backup-using-sql-server-management-studio/
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-IN/library/bb933794.aspx

After having successfully done the above, the UDP plans, configuration would have been migrated.

The Backup destination still has to be imported. Refer the below documentation for importing Data Store.
